James is a documentary filmmaker and graphic designer from Canberra, Australia. James holds a Masters in Social Documentary Film from the School of Visual Arts and a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication with first class honors from the University of Technology, Sydney. He brings a designer’s eye to his filmmaking and a global upbringing and cross-cultural experience to his work.
Having grown up between Australia, The United States and Indonesia, James is interested making documentary films touching on the histories of the places he has lived and the social and political forces that shape life in these countries. Most recently James followed the unique, and so far unexplored, NYC subculture of subway obsessives in his film RAIL FAN. The film tracks the origins of these young men’s connection to the city’s battered and rundown mass transit system and shows how this diverse group of city kids came to find a safe haven and community underground. RAIL FAN won the Cine Golden Eagle Award in 2017 for best youth documentary. James has worked in a wide range of capacities in documentary filmmaking, both in the field and in post production, and has worked on films such as IT WILL BE CHAOS, JOAN DIDION, THE CENTER WILL NOT HOLD and GI JEWS.
